About GSMST Orchestras

The GSMST orchestra program is the largest discipline within the GSMST Fine Arts Department. The orchestra program serves approximately 20% of the school and is made up of four orchestras - Concert Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, and Honor Orchestra. These ensembles provide a logical learning progression for students to move from middle school into high school string performance and continue to increase their playing skills.

CONCERT ORCHESTRA

Concert OrchestraConcert Orchestra is the largest orchestra. Students in this ensemble perform mostly Grade 3 music, and continue to review and refine many of the skills learned in middle school. Members of this ensemble have opportunity travel every other year the weekend before Thanksgiving Break to participate in workshops or performances at locations like Disney World and Universal Studios. The Concert Orchestra also takes part in the GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluation. Members may also participate in the GMEA Solo & Ensemble performance evaluation and may audition for county, Atlanta-area, and state-wide honor orchestras.

SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA

Membership in the Symphonic Orchestra is by audition only (auditions take place in early May each year). Students in this ensemble perform mostly Grade 4 music, and continue to refine many of the skills learned in middle school as well as perform new challenges within each concert. Members of this ensemble have opportunity travel every other year the weekend before Thanksgiving Break to participate in workshops or performances at locations like Disney World and Universal Studios. The Symphonic Orchestra also takes part in the GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluation receiving consistent "Superior" ratings. HONOR ORCHESTRA

The GSMST Honor Orchestra is the top ensemble within the GSMST orchestra program. Membership is by audition each May and students provide their own transportation at school to rehearse at "0 Period" (starting one hour before GSMST's official start time). The ensemble has consistently received superior ratings at GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluations, and individual members are regularly selected for county, Atlanta-area, and GMEA All-State honor orchestras. The ensemble travels each school year and has performed in North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, New York, and took its first international trip to China in 2011. With these travels the ensemble has garnered a number of awards/recognitions including a 2nd place overall orchestra division trophy at Festival Disney in 2016, appearing as part of the National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall in 2014, taking the top orchestra award at the 2013 Heritage Music Festival in New York City, and the Best String Section award at the 2012 Grand National Adjudicators Invitational. In addition, the orchestra has been invited to perform at the 2017 GMEA In-Service Conference.
